T-shirt Upcycle: Door Decoration

Alright friends, here is my second t-shirt upcycle project to share with you. Again, it was all white t-shirts that were worn out and since we have an orange door, white seemed the most appropriate.
Finished Product
What you'll need:
Sorry, it's a bit blurry. I believe it was a 5 in. ball, but if I did it again I would use a smaller one.
I used approximately 3 medium sized t-shirts for each ball.
1 1/2-2 in. strips that you cut down to:
1 1/2-2 in. squares, could've been smaller too.
Cut the edges off the squares to create circles. Once you have all your circles you fold them in quarters and hot glue them into place on the ball. I started at the "top" and worked by way around.

Finished with the top and bottom, then worked my way into the center.
A view from the top.

Look at the difference in size!
I didn't realize it would change so drastically,
a big reason why I'd start with a smaller ball next time.

One finished ball.
A view from the side.

There you have it. A raggy old t-shirt turned into a cute door hanging! I had planned to use three balls, but went through all my shirts and this project is far more time consuming then I was expecting. So I settled for two...at least for now! ;)

Okay, I had to do second post today to tell you all about my deal! :) like I have mentioned before I'm interested in switching to reusable sandwich/snack bags, but wasn't ready to fork out the upfront cost. Well today's plum district deal helped me get my baggie purchases started. For only $15 I will get $30 worth of bags. It won't be all the bags I will need, but it will certainly be a start and $15 seems much easier to manage on a budget. I'm looking forward to shopping for some cute bags! :)

If this is something that you are interested in also be sure to click on this link to get yours too!

Problem Solved!

I've had this problem, well two actually, that I've finally found a solution for. :) Of course, when such great moments happen in my life, I share them with all of you!

Problem #1: Toddlers

I've always been a shower-in-the-morning type person, mostly due to my hair. I don't have that cute hair look after sleeping on it all night, so I've had to set my alarm early enough to have a morning shower! :-/ It has works out just fine most of my life. Then, enter a preschooler and a toddler. Uh hum, as adorable and lovable as they are my once 35-45 minute morning routine has now become a seemingly endless process each day. I'm sure you can all understand that it's hard to get from shower to ready-to-go in a reasonable amount of time, when with only one side of your blush applied, mind you, you have to go break up world war 3 over the ONE and only toy that seems to be of interest at the moment. It's also fun to hear an intense scream coming from the other room while you have your eye liner directly under your eye--not safe, not good. Yet, your youngens thought that would be a perfect time to try their monkeying around skills and realize maybe their balance wasn't quite ready for the heights they thought reasonable to climb and ended up practicing their tumbling skills instead. Oh and my favorite is their desire to play with every bottle, container and item in your bathroom while you're simply trying to curl your hair! That always make for a burn-waiting-to-happen moment when you're constantly grabbing things from their hands with your one spare hand (while leaning into the hot curling iron) or removing it from your hair in a split second to keep them from ingesting your favorite bottle of perfume. While on a relaxing, no agenda, lay around in our pajamas kind of day the problem doesn't exist. But, for whatever reason (probably so we can all stay sane) there are those days when we actually have to get up and get ready. On those days, I'm usually a frazzled mess by the time I arrive and have to keep checking the mirror to make sure I'm not showing up somewhere with only half my make up applied or my hair unbrushed! Anybody else have this problem?

Problem #2: Night Time Showers & Bed Head

Enter a possible solution: night time showers. It certainly takes care of one of the getting ready items off the list AND during the summer I find that night time showers seem so appropriate. I often wonder, why bother getting all pretty and showered in the morning to just end up covered in sunscreen, bug spray and sweat by evening. I'm not a fan of bringing all those layers of "yuck" into my bed, so a nice cool shower is the perfect solution, right? Right. Except for the bed head. The morning result from such a lovely decision the evening before leaves me looking less then desirable with hair not wanting to be properly managed.

Did you read my post title? I sure hope you did, because now comes the fun part, I've solved these problems! :)

Solution: Super cute, fast and easy curly hair.

So here's how it works:
1. You shower in the evening to get all the layers of summer fun off of you before falling into bed.
2. Let it air dry or if you like you can blow dry it until it's left slightly damp.
3. Grab two pairs of your favorite cute, clean socks {you are allowed to use ugly ones with holes too}. You can use thick socks or thin socks, depending on the size of curls you like.
4. Part your hair into 4 sections. It works well to just split it down the center and do two sections {top and bottom} on each side.
5. Wrap each section of hair up into your sock until you reach the bottom of your ear.
* You use a closed sock (or any other kind of strip of fabric, if you'd like). Start at the bottom of your hair and roll it up (I usually roll it inward--toward my face) to about the bottom of your chin or ear (depends on how high you want the curls). You then tie the two ends of the sock together to keep them in place.
6. Go to sleep, that's an easy step! ;)
7. In the morning, you can easily unroll your hair and with some product in your hands slowly start pulling your curls apart and wrapping them up in your finger. You just continue doing that throughout your whole head.
8. Style it the way you like. :)

So in about 10 minutes you can have adorable curls and a ready to go look! No more bed head and no more endless amount of time spent running between the bathroom and "rescuing" your kids from the trouble they've found themselves in. :) Give yourself a little time to get dressed and apply your make up and in under 30 minutes you are out the door looking like you spent hours in front of the mirror. :)

There you have it! I hope this solution works for all of you mamas who have some of the same problems I do, because I know you're out there.... ;)

Guest Post-Janet with a Ballard Topiary knock off!

You are in for a treat today! :) I found Janet and her blog while browsing all the fun that's out there in the blogging world one evening and I just loved her projects. I was thrilled that she agreed to share some of her ideas with you too. I've got a few bloggers working on a mini-series on inexpensive DIY projects to share with you. I hope you'll feel inspired by these ideas and realize how inexpensive and fun some of these projects can be. Without anything further from me, I'll let Janet tell you all about her project! :)

Hi all you Simple Life readers! My name is Janet, and I'm the proprietor of I HEART My Glue Gun. Chelsea's awesome, and I'm thrilled to be over here guest posting on her blog!

Today I'm going to share with you a Ballard Topiary knock off!

These puppies start at $49.00 at Ballard! Wow!

But for under $8.00, you can have one that's very similar and in my opinion, CUTER!

 So let's get started!

Here are the supplies you'll need:

I got everything from the two different Dollar stores, EXCEPT the ball which was $2.39 at Michael's. Yes, it pained me to pay over a dollar for a Styrofoam ball, but what could I do? None of the $0.99 or Dollar stores had them!

First, I cut the block down to size and stuck it in the vase.

After that, I shoved the dowel in there...

Put some Spanish Moss at the top of the vase to cover up the block.

(whoops! Slightly crooked....fixed it off camera)

Cover your ball in glue, and then the fun of attaching the floral moss begins! It's kind of a pain, but eventually it'll all stick. It might take a few tries, however.

And voila! A beautiful, Ballard inspired topiary! LOVE IT!

Thanks for having me over at your place today, Chelsea!

You all can come visit me anytime at I HEART My Glue Gun!

Thank you Janet for stopping by today. I love your idea. It's so easy, cheap and most of all SUPER cute!

Not one, but TWO awards! :)

Wow! I'm back, I think. :) Remember that "Project A.D.D." post, well the condition is still here. I've got too many things on my want to do and need to do lists that I'm struggling to keep up. Must. Slow. Down. But, all that to say, I'm getting back into the swing on things on here because I just have way too many fun things to share with you. And what better way to start back up then with sharing my awards with you? Great, right?

Yay!! How fun is that? I've been off-line for a while, so I'm finally getting around to acknowledging these fun awards two blogging pals have given me. Of course, along with the rewards comes some responsibility, so I must follow the "rules" and play fair. :)

Rule #1: Link to the blogger who gave you the award.

The first reward came from Deon at Chasing Chickens. Our blogs are very similar, we share the same desire to live a more simple life. The only big difference is she's doing it all in Canada. So to all my Canadian friends (and Americans too) check her out for coupons and deals that will apply to you! :)

The second reward came from my newest blogging buddy Alana at My Taylor Made Home. You'll be hearing a lot more about her in the coming weeks, because we're working on bringing you a series we've done together. So be sure to stay tuned for details and information coming all about it! :) While you're at it be sure to check out her blog too and get to know her a bit, she'll get you all organized in no time! ;)

Rule #2: Tell us 7 Things about yourself.

7 Things About Me
  1. I'm a night owl. All my friends know better then to call me before 9 am, but calling at 10 pm is totally acceptable! ;)
  2. I'm a "water" type outside person. I love being by the water, especially when it's sunny and hot outside. I don't really care if it's a lake, waterfall, ocean, river or, I just enjoy the option of cooling off in it. Although for serious swimming, I do prefer chlorinated water. ;)
  3. I rarely watch TV and have no idea what's really happening in that "world".
  4. I could care less about nearly any sport, unless there is someone I love playing in the game, then I enjoy watching them play.
  5. I have a sweet tooth...or two! ;)
  6. I drink coffee so that I have something I can add it to my flavored creamers. :)
  7. I haven't "gone" to work in 4 years!
Rule #3: Answer the following questions.

 Questions

  1. Name your favorite color. I always hate this question. I'm not one to "pick" ONE color. I tend to gravitate towards bold, deep colors like purples, blues, reds, greens. I also love the neutrals, I'm just practical like that! ;)
  2. Name your favorite song. Again, another question I don't really have an answer for. I think it changes with my mood. :)
  3. Name your favorite dessert. Did you notice the sweet tooth situation on number 5?! :) I could eat a lot of desserts, but usually my "go to" dessert is ice cream, but it can't be fruity {it's a dessert, remember?} I want carmel, chocolate, peanut butter, etc in my ice cream. :)
  4. What wizzes you off?
  5. When you're upset you... yell. Not a good quality, but I'm a verbalizer of how I feel and if I'm upset, people usually know about it. :-/
  6. Your favorite pet. Dogs.
  7. Black or white? Two of my faves, depends on the situation, but probably black.
  8. Your biggest fear Being in a dangerous/difficult situation with my kids.
  9. Best feature Geez, I don't know. Right now I've been getting a lot compliments on my tan! ;) I can thank my love for being outside all summer for that one. :)
  10. Everyday attitude. I'm pretty sure my mood changes too much. ;) But, I do think that looking at ways to  make the best of the situation you're in is the best approach to life.
  11. What is perfection. Unattainable.
  12. Guilty pleasure. Usually something sweet. :)
And now the really fun part

A new cell phone plan?

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Straight Talk for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

My husband & I have been on a "contract" type cell phone plan for over 10 years and have been used to just renewing it, most of the time without considering other options. This year our plan has expired and we have considered changing companies. We haven't done a lot of research yet, but I came across this cell phone program I wanted to share with my fellow money savers too! :)

I just learned about a company called Straight Talk. You can find out more information by watching this video called "mom knows best" or head into your local Walmart.

They are official sponsors of Fantasy Fishing, you can see all about it on hook, line and sinker.

Here are some of the highlights I've come across:

Their monthly plans include:

•The “All You Need Plan” meets even the needs of heavy phone users with 1,000 minutes, 1,000 texts and 30 MB of web data.

•Unlimited Monthly service is only $45, and includes calls, text, picture messaging.

•411 calls are included at no extra charge.

•Free from activation, reactivation, or termination fees

Long Distance:

•Straight Talk International Long Distance Service is a flexible prepaid calling service that enables you to make international calls from your home, cell or office phone at low rates.

Want to call a friend overseas?

They offer reconditioned phones with lots of functions for $10 and they carry some smartphones.

Watch this video to see if their phones have everything you need.

I'm actually going to do a bit more research to see if this might fit our family's needs to save money right now. Our average bill is nearly $100/mo with no data plan, so this would be comparable in price, but would include the data plan. Unless we went with the $30 plan, then it would save us about $30-$40 a month. We don't have data plans now and have very "plain" phones, so we wouldn't be losing anything we are used to. Certainly worth looking into.

What would you do with an extra $30 a month? Could that money help you pay off debt, or save for something special? Maybe this is another opportunity to start dreaming again, friends. :)

I've learned that some times we need to think outside of what we are familiar with to find ways to save money, without having to entirely give up what we are used to. This seems to fit that situation.

Another perk is that there are no contracts, so you don't get tied into a plan that may not be the best fit a year from now. Since the plans are straight forward you don't end up with extra charges either. If your contract with your current provider is almost up, this may be something to consider even as a temporary option. I'm liking the sound of this!

Some things to consider:

-Reception, I know in some areas certain carriers have limited service, and I'm not sure how reliable their coverage is.

-As far as I know, they do not carry the iPhone or Droid, which are both really popular phones and their apps are becoming a perk people are looking for.

Be sure to check out Straight Talk if this sounds like a good fit for your family and tell me how it goes! I'm really curious about how people feel about, so leave a comment if you have more any more information/insight to share with us!

MIA

Sorry pals, I've been missing in action on here this week. Unfortunately I can't promise I'll be back in the swing by tomorrow either. We spent some time in the mountains last week (which was LOVELY and I'll fill you all in soon on all we did), but now I'm playing catch up at home. We are working hard on getting things figured out for preschool for our daughter and we've been unpacking and getting the house back to some kind of normal again. On top of all the usual daily tasks and spending some quality family time together, the computer has been neglected (which is okay with me) for a bit. I do have a growing list of things to share on here, so please bare with me for a few more days until I get my family "business" in order.

I hope all of you are enjoying the last few days of summer before school gets going again. It's so hard to believe it's almost back to school already!!
